Mengsong Ancient Tea Mountain – A Hidden Legacy of the Lahu People

Mengsong Ancient Tea Mountain is located in Mengsong Township, Menghai County, Yunnan. It borders Jinghong City to the east, connects with Gelanghe Township to the south, and faces Nannuo Mountain across the Liusha River. Mengsong is one of the oldest ancient tea regions in Menghai. Based on the discovery of several dozen acres of extremely old tea trees in Baotang Village, the history of tea cultivation in the Mengsong area by ethnic minorities is believed to be as long-standing as that of Nannuo Mountain.

Most of the ancient tea gardens were planted by the Lahu people. Around these gardens, ancient Lahu villages can still be found. Baotang Old Village is likely the first settlement of the Lahu in the area, and today, over 3,000 mu (approx. 200 hectares) of ancient tea gardens remain preserved.

Shrouded in mist year-round, Mengsong Ancient Tea Mountain holds rich reserves of ancient tea trees. It wasn’t until the late 20th century that these trees were rediscovered and reintroduced to the market. Tea from Mengsong is now well-regarded for its distinctive floral fragrance and robust cha chee (tea energy), giving it a unique position in the Pu-erh market.

The freshly harvested dry leaves release berry-like and ripe tropical fruit aromas. The tea liquor is mellow and smooth, offering a full, sweet taste with a clear and lasting hui gan (returning sweetness) and salivation.

The cha qi is gentle yet powerful, while the overall flavor is deep, full, and refined—leaving a lingering finish that resonates with each sip.
